I had a lovely client of mine come in for an updated business portrait and we got chatting about her nutrition business. I thought it might be interest to some of my clients so I did a little interview with her so I could tell you all about it….

Kate has an impressive CV. She was the youngest person to qualify as a studio instructor in Wales (at just 16!), in 2005 she did her personal trainer award and her nutrition qualification in the same year. She currently studying to do her MSc in Nutrition – a busy lady!
What is Metabolic Balance?
Metabolic Balance has won many awards and is starting to be recognised over here but is massive in Germany – it’s even advertised in GP’s and pharmacies over there. There are only 40 coaches in the UK certified coaches, Kate is the only one in the Kingston area.
The metabolic balance is a 12 week program starting with blood tests – they do 55 tests including insulin (this is associated with fat storage). Your test results are sent to Germany and they send back a list of foods you should be eating and anything left off is not allowed. The plan is divided into stages, first there is a 2 days detox, then a 14 day ‘strict’ phase and then phase 3 which is what you stay on until you reach your goal weight.

Who’s it for?
Anyone who wants to get healthy, mostly it’s people who want to lose weight, both men and women come but men are apparently much better at sticking to it!
The plans are really varied from person to person, once they’re through the strict 2 week phase there are lots of ‘treats’ people are allowed. She likes to see it as a plan for life not a diet, it re-educates people on what to eat and things like portion size.
Who are your main clients:
Women in their 40/50’s to lose weight, younger women losing weight for their weddings, women in their 30’s who are trying to conceive and business men mainly for weight loss and stress.
What’s included?
You get 8 appointments over 12 weeks, the first is an hour with Kate to go over everything, the blood tests and the plan from Germany.
Tips – Kate recommends always going 5 hours or longer between meals and not snacking, after two weeks everyone has found that’s really easy to do. Men seem to go longer without food than women but they tend to struggle more with alcohol. One of the rules is every body must have an apple a day!
Where do they go:
They go to Harley Street for their blood tests, they’re open 7am to 7pm and you can turn up anytime and then the rest of the consultations are with Kate and she has clinics in Cobham, Kingston & Wimbledon. Kate will also be in Harley St starting next year.
The first session with Kate is 1 hour and the follow up tends to be between 30-45 minutes.
Rules… Everyone gets taken off wheat and sugar, rye bread is recommended, spelt is also good. You also weigh your food in the first two weeks to teach you about portion sizes. Most people’s portions are too big, a lot of the program is re-educating about portions and types of food. Once you get the first two weeks out of the way it is easy to stick to.
Unusually for a weight loss program you can’t exercise for the first two weeks as you’re trying to get your body to burn fat. Where that wouldn’t be a problem for me ; ) the athletes she treats lose weight more slowly as they still have to do intensive workouts in the two weeks.
Pre & post natal clients…
Kate can tailor a plan for pre and post-natal clients as their diet needs are different. For those trying to conceive, the ideal BMI is 23, being underweight or over weight can cause problems with fertility. Women should get their BMI down before they conceive if they are overweight.
Post natally focusses on food for breast feeding if they are breast feeding and how to lose the baby weight but keep their energy.
